Lighting a Light Bulb
Learners will design and construct circuits that operate lights and other electrical devices.
Liquid Conductors and Insulators
Learners will be provided with a hands-on lesson that will enable them to investigate liquid as a conductor or a non-conductor.
Making Fuses
The activity will be applied to demonstrate the function of fuses. Learners will be able to manipulate materials and construct a working fuse. They will be asked to record their observations and determine whether they would change any of the designed features.
Making and Testing Electromagnets
Learners will have an opportunity to work with electricity and wire to learn about some of the interesting and practical properties of magnetic fields. Learners will measure the magnetic field in two ways the first involving the use of a magnetic compass, the second using paper clips. This activity reinforced the idea that magnetic fields around a magnet have a shape, and that compasses and other sensitive instruments can be used to detect and measure the size and shape of the field.
Photosynthesis
Learners are introduced to the process of photosynthesis, looking at the conditions and ingredients required for photosynthesis to occur, the by-products of photosynthesis and the role of chlorophyll in trapping radiant energy and converting it to chemical energy.
Power Lines
Learners will recognize the potential dangers involved with power lines. They will illustrate how electricity gets to their home and discuss safety concerns associated with electrical currents in their home or community.
Switches
The construction of switches will help learners understand the differences between open and closed circuits and different types of switches to control circuits. Using the design and inquiry process, learners will make predictions, experiment, implement and interpret results. Learners will share results and discuss their findings.
School Energy Audit
Learners will investigate how much energy it takes to keep their daily technology working.
Build a Solar Car
In this activity, learners will work in groups to build a solar car. Learners will test the efficiency of the car and will think of and test ways to improve the speed and design of their car.
